Creativity Inspired by a Childhood Steeped in Irish Myth
Imagine a childhood where history books were as thrilling as comic books. As a child, I devoured Irish mythical tales like that of the legendary Fionn mac Cumhaill, who gained universal knowledge from a magical Salmon of Knowledge. Irish myth and folklore, filled with timeless themes and fantastical elements, became a wellspring of inspiration for my art.
As an Irish native and now a citizen of Australia, living on the traditional lands of the Guringai and Darug people, I pay my respects to their ancestors and acknowledge their connection to this land.
I continue to explore how Irish myths resonate in our modern world through small, intricate black-and-white drawings. They might be the size of a postcard or an A4 notebook page. Technical fine-liner pens are a carryover from my industrial design background. They allow me to capture finely drawn, meticulous detail.
A Tapestry of Influences: Myth, Music, and You
I find inspiration in everything from Irish myth, science fiction, poetry, street art and graphic novels, as well as the evocative power of music. My most important influence? The people I share my work with.
My process is highly collaborative. I show sketches, seeking feedback and suggestions. Some people might challenge me to explore new directions, while others fuel me with enthusiasm and support. Connecting with people through art nourishes my creativity and ensures the final piece resonates with a wider community.
Intrigue at the Edges of Darkness and Wonder
People describe my drawings as captivating and intricate. Viewers are drawn in by the small format and visual layout. Close inspection reveals hidden details that reward a deeper viewing. Some say my work is a portal to another world, where the familiar becomes strange and sparks the imagination. There’s a touch of magic, with a subtle darkness or maybe a mirror that asks critical questions without being judgemental.
