The Other World is a line drawing of a place outside of time. A figure is entangled or possibly, cradled in the roots of a tree. The tree is a scribbly gum with a split trunk, a liminal or threshold space. Two places, maybe more, are connected in this one artwork. In Irish mythology and folklore, caves and other such openings are places where the veil between ‘ceantar’ (this world) and ‘altar’ (the other world), are especially thin and loaded with the potential for one to blur into the other. To my mind, they are an invitation to see things differently or to think about how one place connects with another.
It’s a small drawing, measuring just 13 x 20 cm, loaded with detail and ideas. I produced it by hand, albeit with some help from Dalle-2. If you’re curious about the process, the ideas and thinking behind it, you can explore this visual story but if you only want to know one thing, know this. Although the drawing is inspired by Irish mythology, the scribbly gum in the picture is native to Mt Kuringai, New South Wales, Australia.
Enjoy!
